How to create an out-of-doors Springtime routine with your kids

outside time woodlandsmommy
Spring is here, and I’m so excited to hit the reset button, recharge, and create a family routine that blends outdoor adventures, quality time, and all the everyday tasks I have to juggle. As the weather warms up, I love getting outside, bonding with my family, and finding ways to keep the kids active while still balancing publishing a website, homeschooling, household chores, and finding those much-needed moments to relax. Whether I'm soaking up the sunshine or looking for fun new ways to get everyone outdoors, I’ve come up with a few ideas I’ve been trying with my family. I hope they inspire you to create a healthy, exciting spring routine of your own!

1. Embrace the Outdoors with Nature Walks and Hikes

One of the best ways to spend time as a family in The Woodlands is by hitting the area's 200+ miles of hike and bike trails. With so many trails to explore, your family can get fresh air, stay active, and connect with nature all at once. Whether you take a brisk walk or leisurely stroll, it's a prime opportunity for conversation and bonding, plus you might meet a few neighbors along the way. Make a goal to explore a new trail every weekend, and let your kids enjoy discovering new wildlife and plant species along the way. My girls and I love walking The Woodlands Waterway because it's open and safe, and there's plenty to see!

Tip: Pack a small backpack with snacks and water for a mini picnic in the park after your walk or hike. This way, you can enjoy a rewarding break while soaking in the views.

2. Splash and Play at The Woodlands' Free Splashpads

The sunny spring days in The Woodlands call for a trip to the free spraygrounds in the area! These splashpads are not only fun but also a great way for your kids to burn off energy while cooling down. Whether you visit the Creekside Park Village Center, the one at Bear Branch Park, or a different sprayground, there's plenty of room for running, jumping, and splashing around. It’s a perfect outdoor activity that’s both enjoyable and accessible for families with young kids.

Tip: To make it part of your routine, schedule splashpad time as a special after-school activity or weekend outing, and invite friends along. The kids will look forward to the water play, and it helps everyone unwind.

3. Gardening and Plant Watering

Spring is a fantastic time to introduce kids to the joys of gardening. Whether you have a large backyard or just a small balcony, it’s easy to grow plants together. Start with easy-to-care-for options like flowers, herbs, or even small vegetables. If gardening space is limited, you can use pots or containers, making it perfect for any home.

Tip: Set a specific time each day for your kids to go outside and water the plants. This will help instill responsibility while allowing them to connect with the natural world. Plus, it's a simple way to get some fresh air and sunlight every day!

4. Storytime on the Front Porch

Incorporating outdoor reading time is a great way to blend relaxation with nature. Create a cozy outdoor space on your front porch or in your backyard where you can enjoy a good book together. Set aside time in the afternoon or evening for storytime in the fresh air. This practice helps children build their love for reading while fostering a calm, relaxing environment for the whole family.

Tip: Pick books that are seasonal or nature-themed, allowing the story to complement the beauty of the changing season. It’s a great opportunity to nurture a habit of reading while being outside.

5. Walk to the Mailbox

It may sound simple, but making the walk to the mailbox a part of your daily routine can be a delightful way to get outside, move around, and enjoy some fresh air. You can make this a family event by having everyone walk together in the morning or afternoon. It’s also an excellent opportunity to teach your kids about responsibility by giving them the task of checking the mail.

Tip: Turn the walk to the mailbox into a mini scavenger hunt. Challenge your kids to look for something specific like a bird or a colorful flower. This will make the short walk more exciting and engaging for younger kids.

6. Family Time at Community Events

Our area is known for its vibrant and family-friendly community events. Whether it’s a farmers’ market, outdoor movie night, or local festival, there’s always something happening to bring the community together. Make these events part of your family routine, especially on weekends, to encourage socialization and relaxation.

Tip: Keep an eye on our Events Calendar to plan outings with your kids to outdoor events that you know they’ll enjoy. These events not only allow you to bond as a family, but they also give your kids a sense of belonging and excitement about the community they live in.

7. Creating a Balanced Routine

While outdoor activities are essential for your family’s well-being, balancing other responsibilities like work, school, and relaxation is key to maintaining harmony. Consider setting clear boundaries for outdoor playtime, schoolwork, and downtime. For example, designate specific hours during the day for outdoor activities (like after school or before dinner) and ensure there is some quiet time in between for reading, homework, or relaxation.

Tip: Include your kids in the process of setting up a routine. Have a family meeting where everyone can discuss what activities they’d like to do, what time they prefer, and how to balance all the different aspects of the day. This helps create a sense of responsibility and excitement for the schedule.

8. Be Flexible and Have Fun!

While routines are important, don’t forget to be flexible and have fun! Spring is a time to embrace spontaneity, whether that means impromptu trips to the splashpad, an unplanned picnic in the park, or a family walk on a sunny evening. Allow room for adventure and creativity, and your family will enjoy a routine that feels both fulfilling and fun.

Creating a springtime routine with your kids can help foster healthy habits, quality family time, and a deep connection to the outdoors. By embracing nature, setting aside time for fun activities, and balancing responsibilities, you’ll not only create memories but also a positive, energetic lifestyle that will last well beyond the season.

Happy Spring, and here's to making the most of it with your family!
