Grand Chanukah Celebration at Market Street - December 10, 2023

Menorah lighting

In celebration of Chanukah, Market Street will host Chabad of The Woodlands for a Grand Chanukah Celebration and Menorah Lighting on Sunday, December 10 from 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm.

Israel Portnoy will perform at this year’s event. He is an artist, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. Israel grew up singing in his local synagogue and was influenced by the Beatles, Eric Clapton and Steely Dan at a young age. These early influences have informed his original, eclectic sound.

Israel collaborated as half of “The Portney Brothers” on two albums and now focuses on solo projects. His first, a concept album named "Facing Flames feat. Guilda," was released in 2021 and commemorates a forest fire that destroyed everything he owned in a village in central Israel where Portnoy lived at the time. As well as the ongoing "Shabbat Album" project, he also has several projects of Hebrew music currently being recorded and soon to be released. Originally from Machester, UK, he now splits his time between New York City and Israel.

Portnoy’s musical performance begins at 4:30 pm, followed by the lighting of a nine-foot, eight-branched menorah at 5:15 pm by Rabbi Mendel Blecher. Additional musical entertainment from Portnoy will round out the evening’s festivities.

Market Street’s Grand Chanukah Celebration is a beloved community tradition held in Central Park.  There is no admission fee required to attend. Chanukah Goodie Bags will be available at the event by advance reservation at JewishWoodlands.com.
