MCHD Offers Safe Sitter Class For Free This Summer

altMontgomery County Hospital District will be holding Safe Sitter classes at no charge this summer. The class also includes an American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR/AED certification. Safe Sitter is designed to prepare students in grades 6-8 to be safe when they're home alone, watching younger siblings or babysitting. The Instructor-led class is filled with fun games and role-playing exercises. Students even get to use mannequins to practice rescue skills like choking rescue and CPR.

Safe Sitter is a national, non-profit organization that provides programs to teach youth life and safety skills for when they are home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. Over 175 lives have been saved by Safe Sitter graduates using their skills Young teens need training in first aid, indoor and outdoor safety, and how to handle household emergencies before they are adequately prepared to stay home alone or watch younger siblings. In addition, there is no safe amount of time to leave a child with a caregiver of any age who has not been trained in airway rescue and how to handle life threatening emergencies. Safe Sitter graduates are prepared with the knowledge they need to prevent problems and handle unexpected emergencies.

At Safe Sitter you will learn how to:
  • Rescue a choking child or infant plus ways to prevent choking in the first place.
  • Evaluate an injury to determine how to handle it including how to get help.
  • Prevent problem behavior plus how to manage problem behavior situations.
  • Keep yourself safe in threatening situations from power failures to prowlers.
  • Care for a childs basic needs including feeding, entertaining, and toileting.
  • Establish your own babysitting business.

Make sure your children are prepared in the event of an emergency this summer if they are staying home alone. The skills learned from this class could literally save a life. MCHD is taking registration now for class on July 27.
