Your Little One Can Sew her own Cozy Pajama Pants

I don’t care how modern our world gets, handicrafts are something I will always cherish and try to include in the lives of my children. Our favorites over the years have been sewing, finger knitting, woodworking, and making dishes with air dry clay. Sadly, we haven’t experimented with basket weaving yet, but some of my daughters have had their own experiences weaving tiny baskets at various camps. Maybe 2025 will be our year to delve into it!

Sewing is one thing that has stuck with us over the years. I’ve done most of the sewing and have cranked out dozens of dresses and outfits for them! But occasionally one of them will get an itch to sew something themselves, and I’m glad they have the skill.

These pajama pants are SUPER easy to sew. Back when Joann Fabrics had in-store sewing classes, as a beginner my then 8-year-old sewed up a pair that was just like these. She wore them for a couple of years, and eventually passed them on. Now, it’s time formy baby girl who’s 10 to do this pattern.

I used to purchase paper patterns (i.e. Simplicity, etc.), but in recent years, I've been acquiring digital sewing patterns from some of my favorite pattern companies. One of them is CKC (Create Kids Couture) Patterns, and the pajama pants we made are these Taylor’s Pants. The sizes start at Newborn and go up to 15/16 and also includes doll sizes (perfect for your American Girl Dolls). If you want PJ pants for an adult, there's a separate Taylor's adult pattern for this.

Let me tell you how easy it was! (Also, it took her less than 3 hours total working time.)

We bought the pattern and immediately had access to the printable file. The pattern tells you EVERYTHING you need, and for this project the main items are fabric (the pattern will tell you how much fabric you'll need depending on the size you're making), thread, scissors, and a piece of elastic. We picked up our colorful stars fabric at Joann in The Woodlands / Spring.

We printed the pattern pieces on standard (letter-sized) paper on our regular printer, then taped the pages together like a rectangular puzzle. From there, we cut out the pattern in the size that we needed.

Afterwards, we had our sewing pattern, which for this easy project only included 1 single pattern piece. Then, we placed the pattern piece on top of the fabric and cut out the pieces (we cut out 2 identical pieces of fabric).

Next, it was time to construct the pants. The pattern instructions are easy-to-follow, and if that’s not enough, photographs are included for each step! I mean, these companies really make it easy for you to succeed.

If you decide to purchase the pattern, you'll quickly see how easy it is to put together. The main construction consisted of 4 stiches: We used 2 stitches to adhere the two different fabric pieces together. Then we sewed the inner pant leg / crotch line, and now we  had something that looked like pajama pants! All that was left was hemming the legs and making an elastic waistband.

I have no affiliation with this company, other than my wanting to share this pattern with you so you can make your own pants for your little one or teach him/her how to make their own!

In case you're curious, the main sewing machine I use (and the one my daughter used for this project) is a SINGER Quantum Stylist. It's a heavy duty machine with lots of great features. However, if you're a beginner, I highly recommend the Janome sewing machine. It’s super easy to use, comes in several cute colors, and is designed with beginners in mind. It’s typically priced just over $100.
