We’re awaiting a hurricane! Here are 8 fun ideas to help pass the time together with your family!
- Do a school project - The learning doesn’t have to stop because school’s out of session. Have your kiddos create a presentation on a topic they’re learning about, such as a colorful play dough model of the digestion system, or a salt dough map of the earth.

Indulge in a read-aloud - If you’re not currently reading a book to your child, start one this week. Use our online library system to check out a digital copy for your Kindle app if possible. For young kids, are few books we recommend the Little House series, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Boxcar Children. For picture books, a few of our faves are Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, The Little House, and A New Coat for Anna.

Watch the storm - It might seem odd, but children and adults alike find it interesting to watch the radar of large storms while listening to meteorologists and news reporters give updates.
- Love your neighbor - A major hurricane is a great time to start thinking about how to help others in this time of need. By neighbor, we mean anyone who may experience a loss of any kind during this event. How can your family help? Will you need to host displaced in-laws, organize a food or a diaper drive, or simply start a prayer liner? Start talking about it now so you can get ideas from the whole family and spring into action sooner rather than later.
- Enjoy Google Earth - One of my six-year-old’s newest obsessions is visiting the world via Google earth, the computer program that renders a 3D representation of Earth based primarily on satellite imagery. I was excited to re-explore the tool with her this week as we visited the Statue of Liberty, the Golden Gate bridge, The Great Wall of China, The Woodlands Mall, and other interesting places.
- Watch TV – During the school year, there’s no TV in my house except on weekends or special education-related viewings, but during a storm all bets are off. Get caught up on watching Disney+’s recent releases such as Hamilton, The Greatest Showman, and Beauty and the Beast.
- Decorate for fall - September really is right around the corner! Pull out the orange and brown wreaths and Pumpkin Patch mantel signs, and get the start ushering in the new season.
- Bake black pepper & thyme biscuits, or another type of homemade bread you’ve never tried. You probably already have everything you need, and if the dough needs to rise, well… you’ve got a bit of time!
